Former Inter President Massimo Moratti said the Nerazzurri were ‘brave’ to appoint coach Antonio Conte, admitting the coach has a ‘difficult character’.

Inter bounced back from the Champions League exit with a 3-1 win over Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena last night, stretching their unbeaten run to five games across all competitions, and Moratti claimed it gives the Beneamata a chance to only ‘focus on Serie A’.

“The elimination was a great disappointment,” Moratti told Radio Anch’io Sport. “It wasn’t an easy group at the end, but more could have been done.

“Now, there’s the possibility in the championship, where the Nerazzurri are expressing themselves well, so I think Conte and his team will focus on Serie A.”

Rivals Milan are three points above the Nerazzurri in the League and Moratti has praised the local rivals.

“Milan are playing very well. Even last night, they expressed themselves well. They had one of those particular matches that can happen,” he said.

“At the moment, they’re without [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic and when he’s not on the pitch, you can tell how valuable he is.”

But he quickly returned to talk about Inter and the situation at Appiano Gentile, with Christian Eriksen among the players who are linked with a move away from the club in January.

“When you see that some players don’t have what it takes to allow them to aim for important goals, it’s normal to change to try and put them in a position to play in teams more to their height.

“Nobody expected such a performance [from Eriksen], but he plays little and it’s difficult to judge him. [Antonio] Conte doesn’t let him play much and will have his motivations, but if this is to be the case, it’s useless to continue together.”

Moratti said Inter were ‘brave’ to bring Conte to the club and admitted he has a ‘difficult character’.

“Conte cares a lot about the team and everything he does, but he has a very difficult character,” Moratti added.

“It was a brave choice to take him and it had risks. I believe what should distinguish Inter from Juventus is this great desire to win.

“Otherwise, you won’t win anything.”
