“I think they did what they could because it was an extreme situation tonight,” Moratti stated of a side who were without 11 injured players.
“They performed very well in the first half, they showed what they can do – even those we thought might struggle to perform in Milan.
“But it was quite natural that if Roma had scored a goal, all that inner strength you need to believe you can get a result would slip away.”
Inter have had a problematic campaign and they are now left with the objective of trying to qualify for Europe via Serie A.
However, Moratti admitted that the injury situation won’t make it easy for his outfit.
“There’s the matter of our six remaining games and hopefully we'll be able to play them with enough players so that we can fulfil our duty of putting out a team. Because from what I see, we seem to be constantly trying to make up the numbers.”
Inter, seventh in the table, were also jeered by some sections of their own support at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday.
“Everyone's entitled to express their view,” Moratti added. “I say what I say, so the fans can have their say too.”
