Alvaro Morata feels Spain are getting unfairly lambasted by the fans and media after another Euro 2020 draw and explains what happened with the penalty miss.

The Juventus striker opened the scoring in this evening’s 1-1 draw with Poland, but Robert Lewandowski nodded in the equaliser.

Gerard Moreno then fired a penalty onto the upright, with Morata ballooning the rebound off target.

It was another stalemate for Spain after their 0-0 draw with Sweden and now Euro 2020 progress is in doubt.

“If we listen to what people say that won’t help, because they are all waiting to pile on and criticise us,” Morata told Sky Sport Italia.

“Usually when big nations reach a competition like this, there is a sense of unity around them. We know that we’re following a generation of geniuses who won everything and it’s difficult for us to fill those shoes, but we have to believe in ourselves.”

Even finding the net was not enough to cheer Morata up in Seville.

“It’s a team sport. If we don’t win, then it makes no difference whether I score or not. I am disappointed we were unable to pick up three points, but the next game is like a final.”

The striker tried to explain what happened when he missed the rebound on the Gerard Moreno penalty.

“The ball was travelling at an incredible speed and it was difficult to get it under control. Perhaps I was too close to it and should’ve made a different choice.”
