Monza have released a statement after defender Pablo Mari, on loan from Arsenal, was taken to hospital with stab wounds during a random attack in a supermarket. ‘His life is not in danger, he has quite a deep cut to his back.’

CEO Adriano Galliani spoke to TG2 RAI and confirmed the condition of the Spanish player.

“Pablo Mari has quite a deep cut to his back, but fortunately it did not reach any vital organs like the lungs or anything else.

“His life is not in danger, he should recover quickly. He has some lesions, but not very serious. He is conscious and getting stitches.”

Galliani and coach Raffaele Palladino rushed to the Niguarda Hospital to visit Pablo Mari after news emerged he was one of those injured in the random attack.

“Dear Pablo, we are all here close to you and your family, we care for you, continue to fight the way you know how, you are a warrior and will heal soon,” wrote Monza CEO Adriano Galliani on the official club social media accounts.

The incident occurred in the Carrefour supermarket in the Milanofiori di Assago mall on the outskirts of Milan at circa 17.30 UK time (18.30 local).

There were at least five people taken to hospital with stab and slash wounds, including the 29-year-old Spanish player.

All the wounds are believed to be across the torso, showing the random and frenzied nature of the attack.

One man, believed to be a cashier at the supermarket, has died from his wounds.

The perpetrator was a 46-year-old Italian man who had been receiving treatment for depression, took a knife from the shelves and randomly slashed at people in the supermarket.

He was arrested and taken into custody after shoppers and staff managed to get him under control.
