Monza President Silvio Berlusconi did not hold back criticism of the ‘scandalous’ referee or his coach Giovanni Stroppa after a third straight defeat. ‘I didn’t see any of my suggestions followed up.’

There are already reports that Stroppa could be facing the sack after losing all three games in Monza’s first ever Serie A campaign.

Berlusconi, who famously regularly used to publicly criticise the tactics of his coaches when he was in charge of Milan, has evidently not changed his general approach to the sport.

“It was an unfortunate game, but the other team had 12 men,” Berlusconi told reporters at the U-Power Stadium in Monza following a 2-1 defeat to Udinese.

“The referee was on their side, it was truly scandalous. The referee Di Bello should be called Di Brutto.”

This was a cheap pun because Bello means beautiful and Brutto translates to ugly.

“The winning goal should’ve been disallowed for a clear offside position and the referee always whistled against us when there were clashes.”

Berlusconi was no kinder to his own tactician, fuelling reports that Stroppa could be on the chopping block already.

“Stroppa is here with us, we hope he can get back on track and improve himself. Starting Serie A with three consecutive defeats is something very, very negative.

“We need to get back those who are not in shape and insist on tactical systems that are not being respected. When the opposition is in our half, the two strikers have to stay there ready to run onto a long ball from our goalkeeper.

“I didn’t see my team do that once today, our strikers were deep and the goalkeeper had to pass it out through the full-backs and midfielders first.

“Instead, it is written in our internal rules that we should’ve passed it over the midfield. I went into the locker room before the game and told the players we had to win, that we must not lose.

“I told the defenders how to act with the Udinese strikers, man-mark them, stay close, but they did not do that. I told the goalkeeper to hit it long and the strikers to have as many shots on goal as possible, these were all good suggestions that the team did not follow.”

  1. maybe the old fart should coach himself if he has such a strong opinions about tactics and comes into locker room before match to tell players what to do

    IDK, maybe that’s the issue

  2. Lovely to have Silvio back in the football news.

Even better that he isn’t talking about a team I care about.

He did the same with Ancelotti – Insisted he used two strikers, although his Christmas tree formation was bringing results. Carletto admitted what he did was play Kaka a little higher up the field for the first 5 minutes, and Silvio didn’t pick up on it.

The king of Bunga-Bunga… Not so much of tiki-taka.

  3. I’ve been called him di brutto for two seasons. He’s horrific.

    @Marco. Insulting Berlusco?? Really??

  4. @Vinnie.

You’re calling into question the tactical and footballing knowhow of one of the greatest patrons in football history? Really?? A man who literally made the careers of some of the greatest coaches of the past 4 decades. Really?

  5. @Rosario

Berlusconi made no one. He owned Milan and was fortunate enough that Galliani knew what he was doing and brought in the right coaches and players. Berlusconi signed the checks but has the tactical nous of a cereal box

  6. Oi Robbie, come down to Ilford and we will teach you how to make tea, milk with 2 sugars. If you’re lucky we will show you the secrets of a prawn and mayonnaise sandwich.

  7. Oh I forgot maybe not the tea. The kettle is using too much electricity. Hard times in the genius country with no energy production. God I wish was in the Sunshine State.
