According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, Monza are considering making a move to sign Samuel Umtiti on a free transfer after the former World Cup winner mutually agreed to terminate his contract with Barcelona at the end of June.

Umtiti, who made 170 appearances for Lyon before spending seven seasons on Barca’s books, spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan with Lecce, helping Marco Baroni’s men avoid immediate relegation back to Serie B.

Despite only making 25 league appearances for Lecce, Umtiti established himself as one of, if not the most important player in Baroni’s squad, bringing unparalleled experience to the recently-promoted side.

However, despite Monza’s interest, Di Marzio reports that any sort of formal agreement is still a little while off, but there is certainly interest from Raffaele Palladino and his team.

Thus far, Monza have also confirmed the permanent signings of Matteo Pessina , Andrea Petagna, Pablo Mari, Gianluca Caprari and Armando Izzo, who all spent last season at the club on loan.

Giorgio Cittadini has also arrived on an initial season-long loan from Atalanta as of the beginning of July.
