Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo says the win over Sampdoria was for Sinisa Mihajlovic too.

The Serbian Coach was sacked by the Rossoneri last week, with Cristian Brocchi promoted from the Primavera.

“We’re happy for our fans, they had gone five games without a win,” Montolivo told Milan Channel.

“I think we saw something of what Brocchi asks, and we think there was a lot of Coach Mihajlovic in that win too. We hope to continue like this.

“We immediately made ourselves available to the Coach. This is a responsible team, though clearly it’ll take time.

“We played purposeful football, which exploited the rotation of the midfielders in the diamond. Things need to be smoothed, it’s not easy to put that into practice right away.

“Not conceding goals is a big step forward, because it means you’re always in the game. We were lucky with the goal which was ruled-out, it could have been given or not given.

“We worked hard on set pieces.”

Mario Balotelli was praised for his performance in the match, and Montolivo believes the striker has taken some tentative steps forward.

“He did well, and he’s showing some consistency as he did it against Juventus too. He has a habit of drifting wide a little bit when he’d be more useful to the team if he was closer to the other striker.

“He really helped us in the last few minutes though, because he drew a lot of fouls which allowed the team to catch its breath.”

Finally, the midfielder previewed the midweek game against Carpi.

“Our first goal is to defend our position, we’ll see what happens after that. The next five games are winnable but, as we’ve been saying all year, we have to prove it.”
