Former Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo said Sandro Tonali ‘has more awareness’ after one year at San Siro. ‘Now he’s more than just an alternative’.
Montolivo spent seven years with Milan from 2012 to 2019, having enjoyed stints with Atalanta and Fiorentina prior to joining the Rossoneri.
The 36-year-old retired in July 2019 but is working with DAZN as a pundit and spoke about Tonali’s performance after the 1-1 draw with Juventus on Sunday.
The 21-year-old, who joined on a permanent deal from Brescia this summer, spent last season on loan at Milanello and was initially struggling to adapt to the level in the top of Serie A.
This year, however, the young midfielder made his Champions League debut against Liverpool and has played all four games in the League, scoring against Cagaliri and assisting Ante Rebic against Juventus last night.
Montolivo compared Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli and Tonali after the battle between the two midfielders.
“I think Tonali is maturing,” Montolivo told DAZN. “He has more awareness than last season. Today, he’s more than just an alternative.
“Locatelli is two years older than Tonali, he has already imposed himself in Serie A and the national team.
“Manuel might have something more in terms of vision, smoother passing, but Tonali will get there. He has grown a lot physically. Both are destined to wear the Azzurri shirt.”
