Riccardo Montolivo says he will ‘always’ have Milan in his heart, despite the controversial end to his career at San Siro.

The former Italy international, who retired last year, revealed how he was stripped of the captaincy with no explanation and frozen out at the Rossoneri.

His last appearance came in the Coppa Italia Final defeat to Juventus in May 2018 one year before he was released by the club.

“A year of difficulty fits well in a love story,” Montolivo told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I’ll always have Milan in my heart, let’s say it was the crisis of the seventh year.

“I don’t have the answer to that damned season. And the answers they gave me don’t correspond to the truth.”

“However, I have had problems with some people at the club. And then, for my part, I believe I have always behaved well."
