Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo has seen “a lot of good things” in pre-season but “some mistakes too”.

The Rossoneri are once again beginning the season with a new Coach, with Vincenzo Montella the latest tactician to take the San Siro hotseat after Filippo Inzaghi, Sinisa Mihajlovic and caretaker Cristian Brocchi in the last two seasons.

“We’re trying to put his [Montella’s] ideas into practice,” Montolivo explained to Milan TV.

“Playing possession, playing between the lines, trying not to give reference points. It seemed too easy against Sassuolo and we made mistakes [losing 2-3 from 2-0 up]. We have to work with our heads down.

“I think there have been a lot of good things, then there have been some mistakes too. We have to improve our condition. The Coach was satisfied and we have to continue like this.

“There’s conviction on everyone’s part for what we’re doing and what the Coach is trying to give us. We need to make the leap.”

Reports this week have suggested that another €15m has been freed-up in the budget for another rmidfielder, and Montolivo would welcome a new arrival.

“Any great player is welcome. The Coach and the club will evaluate that necessity together.”
