Montolivo: ‘Experience is helping me’

Riccardo Montolivo concedes experience is making him a better international, as he adopted two different roles this evening.

“Cesare Prandelli told me not to drift wide and that's what I tried to do. We really wanted to prove a point and are working towards quality,” said the Fiorentina midfielder.

“Are we aiming to win Euro 2012? Italy start every tournament to win, then it's up to us to prove we can do it.”

Montolivo moved into the trequartista role behind the two strikers after Alberto Aquilani went off with a head injury.

It proved a masterstroke, as Montolivo provided two assists in the three goals and it was perhaps his best performance in the Italy shirt.

“I felt good in that position, as with my characteristics I tend to be more of a midfielder and so was closer to the deeper positions. I started wide and I obviously feel more comfortable there.

“Getting accustomed to playing for the Nazionale definitely helps, so experience is really letting me improve.”

Montolivo has turned down a contract renewal at the Stadio Franchi.

“My contract runs until 2012, so for the moment I am a Fiorentina player.”
