Serie C side Sambenedettese are on the verge of bankruptcy, as player Maxi Lopez and coach Paolo Montero are paying the bills.

The squad has not received a salary since October 2020 and cannot afford to pay for hotels, so they are travelling for hours by coach to and from games on the same day.

This is the scenario laid out by a statement from the AIC (Italian Players’ Association), which even points out that some younger players received eviction warnings because the club hasn’t paid their hotel bills.

This is the scenario laid out by a statement from the AIC (Italian Players’ Association), which even points out that some younger players received eviction warnings because the club hasn’t paid their hotel bills.

These players are seeking help from teammates, club employees and citizens of San Benedetto del Tronto to find alternative accommodation.

According to La Nuova Riviera paper, last week’s Serie C game with Pesaro was organised and paid for by striker Maxi Lopez – formerly of Catania, Sampdoria, Milan and Vasco da Gama, not to mention Wanda Icardi's ex-husband – and their coach Montero.

Montero is trying to get his coaching career off the ground after his years as a defender at Penarol, Juventus, Atalanta and San Lorenzo.

The situation is in the balance, because Sambenedettese owner Domenico Serafino is in negotiations to sell the club to Kim Dae Jung.
