Vincenzo Montella can’t help but feel regret after Catania threw away a 2-0 lead against Inter. “We were perfect for 75 minutes.”

The Sicilians went into the break 2-0 up and threatened to score many more, but allowed Diego Forlan and Diego Milito to snatch a 2-2 result at San Siro.

“I am upset, although in these important stadiums with world class players, they can change the game in only a few minutes,” said Montella.

“Unfortunately we were perfect for 75 minutes and in the second half failed to take our chances. We lowered the tempo and in a game like this it means you risk losing, such as Giampaolo Pazzini’s late opportunity.

“The first half was fantastic, as we played so well and allowed Inter nothing, hitting them in the right moments with team counter-attacks.”

Alejandro Gomez scored the opening goal, but very nearly didn’t play, as he suffered a family bereavement on Wednesday.

“We told the lad to only do what he felt he was ready for. He chose to stay on and play. He seemed calm yesterday, so was ready for the match.”

Montella has done well at both Roma and Catania, so he has been linked with the Inter bench next season.

“I know how these things go in the media and dynamics change from one moment to the next. I’m too old to let myself be influenced by these rumours.”
