Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella concedes that winning a trophy with Milan was ‘marvellous’ but reaching the Euro quarter-finals with Turkey means ‘a little more.’
Montella is the only Italian left in the EURO 2024 quarter-finals. His Turkey side beat Austria in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night, thanks to a brace from ex-Atalanta and Juventus centre-back Merih Demiral.
A former Milan, Fiorentina and Sampdoria coach, Montella won the 2016 Supercoppa with the Rossoneri beating Juventus on penalties, so he was asked to compare that win with his achievement as the Turkey head coach.
“One victory does not cancel another one,” the Italian tactician said at a post-match press conference.
“If I look at the past, lifting a cup with Milan was marvellous because not many coaches have done it in their careers. This is on a different level, a different dimension. It’s at a European level and it represents a country, not a club.
“I can’t compare them, but perhaps this one [means] a little bit more because it’s happening now, and I am enjoying it.”
