The former striker became the Giallorossi's Coach following the resignation of Claudio Ranieri in 2011. He went on take the reins of Fiorentina, and he earned such respect among the fans that he was applauded two weeks ago during Fiorentina-Sampdoria.
“It was a spontaneous and moving display of affection,” he said, in an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport. “I'm not as cold as people paint me and I was really gratified. The fans understand what we did over three years. In our journey together I was always honest and transparent.
“I always said that my greatest regret was how the story ended. Considering everything we went through together, I wish I could have sat down for a coffee [with Andrea Della Valle] and cleared all the misunderstandings. I'd have fixed our broken relationship, as I have great respect for him.”
The Blucerchiati Coach then discussed some of the elements of his former club, Roma.
“[Luciano] Spalletti is the best Coach I know. He has clear ideas and he knows how to convey them.
“We had a few disagreements because he benched me a lot, but now we're in excellent terms.
“As for Francesco Totti, it's a delicate situation because of what he did for Roma. A bitter conclusion would be in no-one's interest.
“I would advise him against becoming a Coach. Francesco doesn't want to stop playing.”
It's been suggested that among the players who resemble Montella technically there are Juventus' Paulo Dybala and Napoli's Lorenzo Insigne.
“Dybala perhaps has something more than I did. Not in the box, but outside it. We already knew from Palermo that he is very strong.
“Insigne is brilliant and he deserves great rewards. I wanted him for Fiorentina when he was at Pescara. We came close to signing him, because I always liked him. I hope the next Euros can be his tournament.”
