Sampdoria Coach Vincenzo Montella says ‘I’ve never had so many defeats’ but admits ‘nothing happens by chance’.

The former Fiorentina boss gave a lengthy interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport today, in which he reflected on the Blucerchiati’s difficult season that sees them not far from relegation trouble.

“I’ve never been subjected to so many defeats, that’s for sure,” said Montella.

“I read a really nice thought of Bielsa, that I can sum up like this: ‘You improve more in difficulty than in success, because the latter is deceptive and makes you lose balance. In difficult times you hone your convictions and create the base to improve.’

“I have more experience as a Coach now. I think that facts teach you more than words. You must experience things, emotionally, to leave with something.

“Nothing happens by chance. Probably this team, myself included, needs to be up to their neck in it to express themselves best. When we get past obstacles, a relaxation enters on a subconscious level that leads to errors.

“There are always errors. It’s clear in retrospect, given certain results and how they came about, that I could’ve done things differently. There are errors, not regrets, because every decision must be thought through and shared with my staff. Everything is easier in retrospect.

“Four points from top half and the same from relegation zone? I have two eyes, with one looking forward and the other behind. We know that we still need to fight, that we must improve and that we need points, but they must come through a philosophy of the game. You explain to me the equation that to get points to stay up you don’t need to play well. I don’t buy into this idea because I don’t understand it.

“Here we take too much from the last events. You need to be more lucid and rational. I’m an optimist because I see the reality, and that consists of guys who are tenacious, united and aware of the difficulty. If I then look at the others, I’m sure that there are teams in more trouble than us.

“How will I approach my return to Fiorentina? Calmly, with a little curiosity and with pleasure. The three years in Florence were beautiful and I grew as a Coach. I took so much from it and gave just as much. I think I left something. Let’s say we are 50/50.

“Am I thinking about Juve-Sampdoria on the final day deciding the title? No, I only think about keeping us up before the last day.

“Sarri and Allegri? They’re different, both worthy of respect. I appreciate Allegri a lot for the way he communicates, for how he manages the emotional aspect with balance, even after defeats.

“The defeat to Chievo put everyone’s feet back on the ground. All our energy is focused on the present.

“If Tavecchio called me? I read that he needs an expert. I think that’s the right profile.”
