“I found a group of lads ready to work, trained well by Walter Zenga,” said L’Aeroplanino in his Press conference.

“Unfortunately this is the reality of modern football, after the break for international duty we only had a couple of days to work together.

“I expect the lads to rely on the concepts we worked on in training this week, to try and win the game from the first minute to the last.

“I brought some of my concepts to unite with Zenga’s. It is difficult to make big changes in a short time, but this squad has quality and is willing to work, so we’ll see. I am confident.

“We worked on how to make the most of our characteristics, transitioning between attack and defence, positioning. The team was constructed well, I don’t think I need to make huge changes, as moving a position 10 metres further forward can make a big difference.

“The history of this fixture has always tended to be spectacular with many goals, including last season. Having said that, right now I’d make do with a 1-0!

“The more I get to know this team, the less I understand why they struggle away from home. I always believed, even as a kid, that it is much easier to play away than on your own turf. Considering Sampdoria’s characteristics, this should certainly be the case. I aim to win in every arena and every situation.”

Cassano had been largely benched by Zenga and there were many reports the tactician never wanted him in the first place. Is Montella tempted to start FantAntonio tomorrow?

“There is the temptation, as he trained well, is talented and compared to his standards is a little behind schedule.”

It will be a battle of hitmen between Antonio Di Natale and Eder, while Luis Muriel visits his former club.

“I think they are united by the nose for goal, but other than that have different characteristics. Muriel was a little tired after the trip from South America.”

Serie A resumes amid heightened security after the Paris terrorist attacks and fears of further suicide bombings at football stadiums.

“There is fear for us and for our children, it’s only natural, but this is when we all need courage to face these situations, otherwise we are already defeated. I invite fans to come to the stadium and be even more passionate than usual.”
