“This team always tries to play attacking football and is a dangerous opponent. They are without Gilardino and I don’t know whether they’ll play with two strikers, two plus a trequartista or a trident.
“To be honest, it would’ve been a lot easier to prepare for this game if we knew that we were facing a centre-forward like Gilardino.”
Catania also have problems, as they are without Alessandro Potenza to the end of the season after he damaged knee ligaments.
“It’s a shame, as he was going through such a good period of form. Now I will certainly give more space to Marco Motta, who can play in a four-man defence or wide in a 3-5-2.”
Montella hinted he’ll use Juan Pablo Carrizo despite the impressive Thomas Rosicky performance in the midweek ‘mini-game’ against Roma.
They played the final 25 minutes of a match that was originally rained off on January 14, so between this and other ties snowed off, today will be Catania’s first 90 minutes in two weeks.
“On the one hand, not playing for two weeks was good, as it gave us time to settle in the new arrivals. On the other hand, we will have to make up for lost time later on and that is a disadvantage. There’s no point looking for controversy, as this is simply how things have panned out.”
