Vincenzo Montella says Milan's market has already been 'shared and confirmed', whilst discussing Carlos Bacca, Jeremy Menez and M'Baye Niang.
The Rossoneri have been paralysed on the market as the club's sale to a Chinese conglomerate keeps getting delayed, but their young new Coach feels he has the situation under control.
“I simply feel like I'm better than I was a few years ago, and I want to prove that,” Montella told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I feel like I'm almost a Coach, while a few years ago I was incomplete. Now I'm much better prepared.
“But I won't make any promises. It's best to keep a low profile. I don't want to be given time, but I do want to be given credit. Trust me, trust us.
“The word 'patience' has been abolished. I was talking about hurrying, in the good sense of the term, trying to go quickly. It's also a necessary virtue in order to avoid alibis, like talking about the market or the club's sale.
“Inevitably, news about the club reached us even in America, but the group showed that they will not let themselves be conditioned. I accept no distractions, no matter what the reason.
“As for the market, I already gave my directives to the club. Everything has been shared and confirmed with [joint-CEO Adriano] Galliani, whom I speak with on a daily basis. There are no misunderstandings with him.
“There's a need to reinforce ourselves, of course, but that's true for everyone. Even for Juve, who just won five consecutive Scudetti.”
One of the most interesting market situations in Milan revolves around Carlos Bacca, one of the team's best poachers who may nonetheless end up being sold.
“He's strong, he scores, and that's what a striker must do, even when it's not spectacular. Carlos allows you to make the difference, I don't agree with those who think he's unfit for my game.
“I consider him a Milan player and I think our strikers complement each other and have good variety. For instance, [M'Baye] Niang has some undeniable talents, although he still lacks continuity. But he's not satisfied with himself and he has the ambition of improving. He'll prove his maturity when he'll accept the bench, even if he considers it unfair.
“[Jeremy] Menez probably didn't feel like he belonged in this environment any longer. It was a peaceful farewell, but for a Coach, losing a player is always a defeat.”
At one point Montella's name was being touted to replace Antonio Conte with the Azzurri.
“I was flattered by the link, especially at my age, but the Nazionale must be led by someone who has white hair. It's still early for me.
“Here at Milan, what was lacking was enthusiasm and self-belief. Now I think I've started resolving a few small problems. I think of enthusiasm as the conviction with which you do things. The Coach must know how to fuel and sustain that. I'm a passionate man, if I wasn't then I wouldn't work 18 hours a day.
“My first objective? I've been thinking about the Supercoppa against Juventus. It could be the 29th trophy of the Berlusconi era, which really boosts confidence.
“I can't wait to get back to Milanello and start working there, it already feels like home.”
