Vincenzo Montella looks back over his coaching career, including the “dream” at Milan, missing Papu Gomez and why he was “honouring objectives” at Fiorentina.

The coach was fired three times in just over two years, by Milan in November 2017, Sevilla in April 2018 and Fiorentina in December 2019.

“I got along well at every club, but Milan was my dream as a player and it was wonderful to be there as a coach,” revealed Montella on Sky Sport Italia.

“I worked with Papu Gomez at Catania and I say with a little regret that he really made his mark with Atalanta, because I had tried to sign him for both Fiorentina and Milan before that. He is more instinctive now and covers the field perfectly, while Gian Piero Gasperini had an inspired idea to move him into a more central role.”

His second spell at Fiorentina was dismal, managing only five wins, seven draws and 14 defeats in all competition.

“I have great affection for everyone who works at Fiorentina. I believe that we were honouring the objectives we had been set by helping young players to mature. I felt we could’ve done good work there.

“It would’ve been nice for me to have the chance of reinforcing the side in the January transfer window with some pointers, but the club made other decisions and I understand that.”

The final straw was a 4-1 home defeat to Roma on December 19.

“I was surprised by Paulo Fonseca’s Roma, as he is one the coaches who impressed me the most. He was able to adjust his tactics based on the opponent. I was then surprised by his poor results in recent weeks.”
