Vincenzo Montella hopes today’s brace will allow Fiorentina striker Mario Gomez to “have more confidence.”

The centre-forward had scored only one goal in eight months, but found the net twice early on in a 3-1 Coppa Italia victory over Atalanta.

“Goals help a forward and not just one who is accustomed to getting lots of them,” Montella told reporters.

“It is an advantage for him and for the team, so will help him to have more confidence in himself.

“Everyone had a good first half, then after going 3-0 up we let the tension levels drop and ended up working harder than we needed to.

“We chose the four-man defence based on the players at our disposal. Choosing Micah Richards, it was inevitable we’d do that.”

Alessandro Diamanti made his debut in the final 15 minutes, while Montella explained the decision to terminate Marko Marin’s season-long loan from Chelsea.

“Diamanti is eager and we all know his characteristics. He needs to improve his fitness levels and I thought it important to let him breathe the air of the Stadio Franchi.

“As for Marin, it’s simple, we had no problems with him. He’s a talent, but he wanted more playing time and we could not guarantee him that. We also wanted more Italian players, so Diamanti arrived in his place. We wish Marin all the best.”
