“I really respect Roberto Mancini and we also played together, though I was young… I learned from him that you must always improve your teams,” said the Coach in a Press conference.

“The way I see them, Inter have now really improved in terms of their football. They have found the tactical identity Mancini wanted and that is leading to consistent results.

“It will be a difficult game, but the same will be said by Inter. We always play to win in a great stadium and a fascinating atmosphere.”

The Viola are fresh from their 2-0 Europa League victory over Tottenham and will face Roma in the Last 16.

“I saw a focused and precise performance against Spurs. It’s rare we come up against a stronger team than us, but we controlled the game well. Roma? Maybe they are a little bit worried about facing us…

“We give our best when we’re having fun with football. This team deserves everything it is getting right now with its performances and results. We earned all this.

“I am truly, profoundly proud to train these players, even as people. It is the first time I have found a group of people who all dedicate themselves in the best way to our working philosophy.

“The match against Inter is the kind of challenge the players love to take part in. At this level they must become accustomed to these big games every three days.”

Borja Valero has “a 50 per cent chance” of recovering in time to play, while Alberto Aquilani is also struggling with an injury.

“He grit his teeth on Thursday to play with dedication and spirit of sacrifice, proving how much he cares about the team. I want to thank him publicly for that,” concluded Montella.
