The Rossazzurri go into the derby five points ahead of their Rosanero rivals, but enduring a recent slump in form, with just one win recorded from the last six played.

“The derby, now, is the game that we wanted,” exclaimed the Coach in his Press conference on Friday.

“It could not come at a better time, it’s a match that needs no further motivation for, there is no risk of having the wrong approach.

“There are no rules for preparing for a derby, or for the result obtained before going into one. In games like this you have to exploit the opportunity that it creates.

“It is a special moment of the season but we must not be taken over by emotion.”

Montella looked ahead to how the season could end for the Elefanti.

“We are in a prestigious position and we can conclude the season well, defending our current ranking and doing our best to even improve it – we must believe in this and consider that those behind us are running.

“Predictions matter very little, it is essential to maintain clarity and to better manage the emotional factor. We are a united team that has found its balance.

“It is not fair to crucify those who have played in recent games and may have gone wrong. I do not like some of the attitudes [towards the team] that I have seen during the past few weeks.”

The Coach took the opportunity to respond to Fabrizio Miccoli’s assertion yesterday that Catania should not be getting so much praise for their season.

“I have respect and sympathy for him, he’s a player that talks with the football, but I do not agree with what he said.

“Our President, at the beginning of this year, said that he believed Catania would end up doing better than Palermo – in recent years this has not happened, but for now Catania are ahead.”
