Adana Demirspor coach Vincenzo Montella gave a personal account of the severe earthquakes in Turkey, commenting on how it’s affected his players and their home city.

The country was tragically hit by two 7+ magnitude earthquakes on Monday, causing the deaths of thousands and millions in damages to infrastructure and buildings. Relief efforts are currently ongoing and the earthquakes are said to be some of the worst in centuries, being felt across the region.

Speaking to ANSA, Montella first discussed how the earthquakes have affected him and his Adana Demirspor squad, who had travelled to Istanbul for a clash with Umraniyespor today.

“There are continuous aftershocks, we are all worried and at the mercy of events. With Adana Demirspor we’ve been in Istanbul since yesterday, the match with Umraniyespor was cancelled.

“In Adana I know the earthquake was felt strongly, many of my players are worried about their families.

“They reported that buildings collapsed and many people were on the streets in the night. Even the hotel where I’m staying in Adana, I know was evacuated and caught fire.”

The 48-year-old Montella took over as Adana Demirspor coach in September 2021 and is contracted to the club until the end of this season. Since his arrival, he’s averaged 1.68 points per match across 63 games and the team currently sit 5th in the Super Lig after 21 games.
