Montella: ‘Catania an important step’

Vincenzo Montella feels taking over the Catania job is “an important step in my career. I'll base the team around the three or four best players.”

The Coach was in charge of the youngest Roma academy side before being promoted in the wake of Claudio Ranieri's resignation.

Now he prepares for his first full Serie A season at the helm of the Stadio Massimino outfit.

“I thank the President and directors for this opportunity and believe I was given this chance because I'm the right man for the job,” declared L'Aeroplanino.

“I will try to learn the habits of the city as soon as possible, because that too can help a new manager. I've always been good at settling into a new environment.

“I like a team that plays football, trains with the utmost intensity regardless of experience and step on to the field focusing on its own tactics rather than those of the opposition.

“Catania is an important step in my career. I must prove that I am worthy of this job before even thinking about other objectives. I accepted this position with great enthusiasm and think we can really do a lot together.

“At the same time, I am sure that I have a club behind me with solid ideas, so will not promise something we cannot maintain.”

Montella was asked if he would continue to adopt the 4-2-3-1 system used at Roma.

“The system stems from the players and their characteristics. I'll see who the best three or four players are and design the team to put them in the condition to do their best.

“When I took over at Roma, I behaved like a Coach, despite the fact I'd only recently stopped being a player. It's not necessarily true that an experienced tactician is better, as he is competent regardless of his age.”
