Nainggolan was left out of the squad after he uploaded video to his Instagram account of his New Year’s Eve celebrations, drinking, smoking and using blasphemous phrases.

“Nothing changes with regards to Nainggolan. We made a decision, after that he will stay with us with the same confidence we’d always had,” the director of sport told Mediaset Premium.

To show there are no hard feelings, Nainggolan is in the stands of the Stadio Olimpico to cheer on his teammates, shrugging off rumours of a Chelsea offer.

“He realises what happened was wrong and we are convinced Radja will be important in the second half of the season. I am here to make big decisions on the present and future, even if they are unpopular or difficult. I am not here to do what the fans want, but what is best for this club.

“December was not a good month for us, as we didn’t find consistency with how we had started the campaign. We must find the right consistency and this is an important moment for our season.”

Monchi was asked about reports he was in negotiations for Barcelona full-back Aleix Vidal or Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian.

“Aleix Vidal and Darmian are not objectives for Roma. We have to talk about a big game today, as if I were to talk about transfers, I’d be lacking respect for our squad. We’ll talk about the market and everything else during the break.”
