Roma sporting director Monchi admits Federico Chiesa is “strong” but “first of all he’s a Fiorentina player…”

The Giallorossi have been linked with a move for the Viola starlet, and the Spaniard was asked at Bryan Cristante’s presentation if he likes the forward.

“I like him, but first of all he’s a Fiorentina player,” Monchi pointed out.

“He’s strong, I don’t think I can say more than that. I don’t have Chiesa in my head, we’re talking about the players who are here at Trigoria.

“We’re very proud to present Cristante.”

Monchi did also talk about the new signing, who has joined from Atalanta.

“We’ve signed the strongest midfielder from last year, the numbers speak for themselves. The player also had a very important path in the national team, we’re very happy.

“He has the ability to get forward and score, he’s strong and together with the other players we’ve got a strong midfield.

“The best in Italy? We certainly have a good midfield, I can’t say if it’s the best. We have several roles covered and that’s important, we’re strong but we don’t need to compare ourselves to others.

“The important thing is to be happy with what we’ve done and I’m very happy.

“There are always moments [in a negotiation] which are more positive or more negative, but everything is easier when the player wants to come.

“I always felt the conviction that he wanted to come here, and any moments of doubt were overcome by his desire to come here.”

Monchi was also quizzed over whether it’s utopian to dream of the Scudetto.

“Nothing is utopian, last year we weren’t far away from reaching the Champions League final and no-one would have imagined that in September.

“It’ll be difficult because the same team [Juventus] has won it for the past seven years, but we have to do everything to try.

“The fans deserve for us to talk less and act more.”
