The story has been corroborated by the Evening Standard, which adds his friendship with Monaco boss Thierry Henry was ‘decisive’, the pair having played together at Arsenal and Barcelona.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and had been heavily linked with Milan, but it later emerged that they were only prepared to bring him in for free.
