“I am calm about my future, there are still 18 months left on my deal,” Modric told Marca.

“My wish is to stay here for even longer than that, as the truth is I am very happy here, as much as I was on the first day I joined.”

The most recent rather odd twist in the tale came from MasterChef USA and Italia judge Joe Bastianich.

“I met him last summer in Sardinia and advised him to go to Inter,” restaurateur Bastianich told Radio Deejay.

“He revealed to me that he was considering the idea of moving to Milan.”
