Milan were reportedly ready to pounce for Modric in the event Real Madrid had decided to sell the midfielder, but Maldini made it clear the Croat was not a target for the Rossoneri, despite his quality.

“We never negotiated for Modric, but we've said it with Giampaolo: this club are looking for good young players and some experienced ones,” the club legend said at a Press conference.

“The growth of young players takes place through the presence of experienced ones. Modric would be perfect here, but we've never negotiated for him.”

The 50-year-old is now technical director at San Siro, and he was speaking at the dual unveiling of Theo Hernandez and Rade Krunic.

“We have needs in certain positions. Quality players are very expensive. Four midfielders have left, so we'll have to intervene there.

“We negotiated for Bennacer and Veretout. After that, the transfer market is full of negotiations, opportunities and choices.

“Milan seem to be lagging behind, but the market ends on September 2. We're not in a hurry. So many things have to fit together.

“If we can, we'll bring in others that we think are great players.”
