Luka Modric said Daniele Orsato is ‘one of the worst’ referees he knows, probably remembering that the Italian official was the first one to show a red card and give a penalty against Real Madrid in a home Champions League clash.

Safe to say the Croatian star was not impressed by Orsato’s performance in a 3-0 loss against Argentina on Tuesday.

The experienced midfielder told Spanish media that the Italian referee is “one of the worst I know.”

“I am not just talking for today because he has refereed my matches many times and I never have a good memory of him. He is a disaster,” continued the Real Madrid star.

But why was Modric so angry with Orsato?

The 47-year-old, who was named the best referee in the World in 2020, has been in charge of three Real Madrid games in the last year: a 3-2 loss against RB Leipzig in October 2022, a 1-0 defeat against PSG in February 2020 and a 3-1 win after extra time at the Santiago Bernabeu this past May. That victory allowed the Merengues to reach the Champions League Final, which they eventually won.

However, another match against the Premier League giants in 2020, weeks before the COVID pandemic, infuriated Madrid fans and probably even Modric.

In February 2020, Orsato became the first referee to award a penalty against the Merengues and show a red card to one of their players in a home Champions League match.

Former Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was given his marching order at the Bernabeu that night, with Man City winning 2-1 in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.

  1. Sometimes you have to know when to shut up. Thank God Croatia or Morocco did not make the final or even worse both teams in the final. No negative football.
