While Italian media are confident Denzel Dumfries is getting closer to agreeing a new Inter contract, The Athletic insist he is stalling for Manchester United in a possible Aaron Wan-Bissaka swap.

The right-back had been widely expected to leave this summer, as his contract only runs to June 2025 and negotiations on a new deal were proving difficult.

However, they seemed to accelerate over the summer and the most recent rumours in Italy are that he has made an agreement in principle for a new four-year partnership.

It would be worth around €4m per season and set to expire in June 2028.

Dumfries close to Inter deal or not?

However, this evening The Athletic claim that Dumfries does not intend on discussing the extension until after the summer transfer window has closed.

He is said to be keeping an eye on other opportunities, most likely Manchester United, especially if Wan-Bissaka rejects a move to West Ham United.

It is reported that Wan-Bissaka would prefer to join Inter instead, so could be used as part of a swap deal for the Dutchman.

That is an idea that has been floated by intermediaries rather than the two clubs themselves.

Inter bought Dumfries from PSV Eindhoven in 2021 for €14.25m and his price-tag has since sky-rocketed, though perhaps not quite at the €45m it was at last summer.

He made 132 competitive appearances for the club, contributing 11 goals and 20 assists.
