Former director Massimiliano Mirabelli maintains Milan were ‘hasty’ selling Manuel Locatelli, overpaid for Sandro Tonali, while they risk losing Gianluigi Donnarumma and Hakan Calhanoglu.

He was director of sport for the Rossoneri from April 2017 to July 2018, dismissed after the brief Yonghong Li tenure in charge.

“Donnarumma and Calhanoglu are two fundamental players for Milan and they’ve proved that yet again over the last few months,” Mirabelli told Radio Sportiva.

“It’s strange seeing them just a few months away from being free agents. The more time goes by, the higher the risk of losing them for nothing.”

The former director has never held back from criticising his old club and those who replaced him at San Siro.

“Tonali is a great player and Milan did very well to sign him, but he needs time to make his mark, yet they paid a huge amount for him. The cost should’ve been better contained there.”

There is a former Milan midfielder currently in the headlines, as Locatelli shone at Sassuolo and is earning interest from Juventus.

The 22-year-old was sold to Sassuolo in 2019 for €12.5m after his one-season loan.

“When I was at Milan, Locatelli was never on the market, even if he wanted more playing time,” insists Mirabelli.

“I was open to a possible loan or even a sale with buy-back option that would favour Milan. He is one of the best midfielders in Italy and it’s a pity he was sold hastily, as he could’ve done very well at Milan.”
