Ex-Milan man Massimiliano Mirabelli has taken aim at Paolo Maldini and Zvonimir Boban. “Being a great champion doesn’t make you a director.”

Maldini and Boban have come under fire following Milan’s poor start to the season, and Mirabelli suggested the pair were not cut out to work for the Rossoneri.

“Milan’s big problem is that they mustn’t live in the past,” the 50-year-old, who was the Diavolo’s sporting director in 2017-18, told Radio Punto Nuovo.

“History must be remembered, but you can’t be a prisoner of your history. Being a great champion on the pitch doesn’t make you a director.

“Everyone has it in for Giampaolo, whom I consider an excellent Coach. Those who know Giampaolo are aware that Milan must build a team tailored to him, and this isn’t a team who can express themselves in the way he wants.

“Suso is one of their their most important players but can’t play as a No 10, so they don’t have the right man for that position.

“There was a communication breakdown in building the team.”
