Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi warns San Siro is not in a fit state to host a Euro 2032 game, while WeBuild call the structure ‘medieval.’

Inter and Milan continue to pursue their own projects to build new arenas outside the city, whereas the local council and WeBuild are pushing to revamp the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

What everyone agrees on is that they cannot continue like this and time is running out to find a solution, especially now that Italy are co-hosting the Euro 2032 tournament with Turkey.

“As things stand, San Siro is not in a fit state to host a game at the 2032 European Championship,” said Minister for Sport Abodi at a round table discussion.

“We have not yet made any decisions. The city of Milan, like Rome and Turin, would be relative certainties as host cities, but in terms of regenerating the infrastructure, we need to give a response by the end of 2026.”

At the same event, WeBuild director general Massimo Ferrari outlined precisely why Inter and Milan are so eager to get away from San Siro if massive restructuring work is not approved.

“San Siro as it stands now is a scandal for the lack of facilities for disabled fans, but also the VIP zones that do not allow people to enjoy the full atmosphere of the stadium, and yet these are sold as ‘exclusive’ seats.

“In terms of stadiums, this is medieval.”

Part of the problem is that certain authorities are trying to lock down the Stadio Meazza from having any work done to it using the same laws that protect buildings of historic architectural importance.
