Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic sent a touching message following the death of Joe Barone. ‘The only thing that can attenuate this immense pain is knowing you are close’ to Davide Astori.

The general manager had a heart attack at the team hotel before Sunday’s Serie A match against Atalanta and was rushed to hospital in Milan, where he died this afternoon.

The tragedy struck this club just days after the sixth anniversary of the sudden death of captain Astori, which was also in a hotel before an away game.

Milenkovic is one of the players who was present in the Viola squad for both devastating events.

“Director, in fact for once please allow me to call you Joe,” wrote Milenkovic.

“It is a shocking moment, I’d say devastating for all of us. Dear Joe, thank you for your dedication and constant effort for the club and thank you for all that you did for me and my family.

“You were a reference point of the highest professional and human level. Your words, your smile and your infinite kindness will remain sculpted in our hearts. We will never forget your strength and determination, always ready to support and encourage us, especially during the most difficult moments.

“You guided us with wisdom and passion, making us feel an important part of your life, dedicating to us every bit of attention and sentiment. Always with us, in the front line, as a real fount of inspiration and motivation.

“Dear Joe, I give you a big hug, wherever you are. The only thing that can attenuate this immense pain is knowing that you are close to Davide, our great and extraordinary captain, and with him you can continue to experience your passion for football.

“We will with all our strength carry on your ideas and your incredible love for the Viola. A huge hug to your family. A kiss and an eternal salute.

“With infinite gratitude and affection, Nikola.”

Barone’s coffin arrived at the Viola Park training facilities this evening, where tomorrow the gates will be opened allowing fans to pay their respects, as is traditional in Italy.

The funeral will be held in the United States, where Barone’s family moved when he was eight years old.
