Milan left-back Theo Hernandez made his World Cup debut in the worst possible circumstances, with France a goal down to Australia and to replace his injured brother.

The 25-year-old was on the bench for this evening’s match against Australia, watching his Rossoneri teammate Olivier Giroud lead the line.

However, after just nine minutes, everything changed for Les Bleus.

Craig Goodwin put the ball in the back of the net and during that move Lucas Hernandez went down seemingly to badly sprain his knee.

He had to be carried off by medics and was substituted by his younger brother Theo, who is making his eighth senior appearance for France, the first in a World Cup.

Lucas Hernandez of Bayern Munich represents yet another injury for France, who already lost a series of players including Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema and Chelsea star N’Golo Kante.
