There’s a debate on whether Milan deserved to be awarded a penalty kick in their Serie A opener against Udinese, which was their first one in eight months.

It was the first controversy of the season in Serie A. Brandon Soppy collided with Davide Calabria on the rebound, leading to a penalty using VAR. Theo Hernandez converted it, but debates had already begun on social media.

It’s a very debatable call given that Soppy touched the ball but also Calabria’s leg. The question is, what did he get first? Referee Livio Marinelli had no doubt and spent only a few seconds in front of the monitor before deciding to award the spot kick to the Rossoneri.

Italian journalist Giovanni Capuano believes Soppy touched Calabria’s leg first, so the spot-kick was rightly awarded. It was Milan’s first penalty kick in eight months. They had gotten the last one in a home game against Spezia on January 22.

However, there are different views on the incident as other replays seem to prove Soppy got on the ball first. What do you make of Milan’s penalty kick against Udinese? Let us know in the comments section below.

  1. Honestly, as a Milan fan, I don’t understand the call from what I’ve seen. But all the salty people complaining about Milan and PKs… Milan had more misfortune with referees last season than fortune.

  2. Eight months without a penalty and the same people complain in a penalty checked by the referee. And of course against a team which scored a goal with a handball last season and made Milan lose points…. oh the irony
