Milan defender Mattia Caldara has completed a loan move to Spezia, the Rossoneri announced on Sunday.

The 28-year-old spent last season at Venezia and the Rossoneri confirmed the loan to Spezia comes with the option to make the deal permanent.

Caldara joined Milan as part of the exchange which saw Leonardo Bonucci return to Juve and Gonzalo Higuaín arrive at San Siro in the summer of 2018.

The inclusion of Caldara was hailed by pundits as a masterstroke such was the hype around the central defender.

However, a succession of serious injuries limited him to just two appearances for the Rossoneri, with neither coming in Serie A.

Caldara started his career with Atalanta but agreed to join Juve in January 2017 yet remained on loan with La Dea for the remainder of that season.

He took part in Juve’s pre-season in 2018 and was even given the No. 13 but left to join Milan.

Caldara, who has two Italy caps – both from 2018 – returned to Atalanta on loan in the second half of the 2019-20 campaign and remained the following season.

  1. Such a wasted talent. Those injuries set him back so badly.
