Graffiti on the walls of the training ground and chanted insults eventually prompted his transfer to Swiss outfit FC Luzern.
“After five exciting years, my experience with the Genoa jersey has concluded,” wrote Milanetto in an open letter.
“I am a fortunate man and player. I felt the strength of the Grifone spirit in every battle, while I loved, respected and honoured this shirt every time I pulled it on.
“I thought I would wear these colours to the end of my career. Unfortunately, that will not be the case. My gesture is not a sign of weakness, but rather a gesture of love towards this glorious club.
“I retain unforgettable memories, like the climb up from Serie B, the record of five derby victories, friendships that will last forever and stabs in the back I wasn’t expecting. It all helps you to grow.
“I thank the Preziosi family for this wonderful adventure and all those who have shown support during the past week.
“I say goodbye to everyone and, as a friend of mine said, ‘you can only understand and love some stories at the final pages.’”
Milanetto joins several other Italians at Luzern, including Davide Possanzini and Massimo Bonanni.
