Omar Milanetto’s lawyer is confident the ex-Genoa captain will soon be released, as in his interrogation he “proved his total innocence.”

The player, now at Padova, was arrested on Monday and remains in a jail cell accused of being at the centre of a betting and match-fixing scandal.

Milanetto was interrogated by the Cremona magistrate today and lawyer Mattia Grassani was thoroughly impressed.

“It was an open confrontation of ideas,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Omar took a firm position and did not refuse to answer any question. He eliminated every shadow over the two evenings in question and his name is referenced very few times.

“There was only one incident under investigation and we hope he can return to his family tomorrow. The officials can now remove the notice of investigation.

“His position is of a player who really cared about the match in question, was decisive in the victory and is not included in any hypothetical fix.

“In the evidence there are no witnesses, no movement of money between banks, no references to him or pocketing money. He proved his total innocence.”

Lazio captain Stefano Mauri is also in jail awaiting his interrogation after Monday’s arrests.
