Milan have an injury crisis on their hands in midfield, so are trying to persuade Genoa to return Alexander Merkel.

The German talent was one of the shining lights of the Rossoneri youth team, but half his contract was sold to Genoa over the summer as part of the Stephan El Shaarawy deal.

“Merkel is an important element for us and he is going to become a champion,” said Genoa President Enrico Preziosi.

“I will talk to the lad to figure out what his aspirations are.”

The Rossoblu are unwilling to simply hand back Merkel mid-season unless El Shaarawy makes the same journey in the opposite direction.

“We will see how the situation evolves over the next few days,” agent Fabio Parisi told Calciomercato.it.

“For now he remains a Genoa player.”
