The Champions League group stage kicks off and these Milan vs. Newcastle predictions take an early look at two sides that will be hoping for a long run in the competition this year.

Milan vs. Newcastle United odds

1 – Milan to win – 7/5

2 – Over 2.5 goals scored – 8/11

3 – Both teams to score – 4/7

4 – Christian Pulisic to score anytime – 4/1

5 – Milan to win and both teams to score – 3/1

Milan can count themselves quite fortunate to even be part of the Champions League this season. The Rossoneri are only here because of Juventus’ points deduction and their defence of the title last season fell away quite early on.

But Stefano Pioli’s side have started the season off in fine form, after some major additions to the squad in the summer hit the ground running. A gruelling Derby della Madonnina comes just days before this tie but confidence will be high at the San Siro.

Three wins out of three, before that game against Inter, dispelled any doubts about how Milan would get on this season and now they will be keen to get off to a good start in the Champions League. With Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund the other two clubs in Group F, home victories will be crucial.

It will, no doubt, be a close game, but Milan could get the three points they need on Tuesday evening. Christian Pulisic has started life at the San Siro incredibly well and he will feel as though he has something to prove to the English media, so he is our tip to find the net at anytime.

This is somewhat uncharted territory for Newcastle. The Magpies last played in the Champions League 20 years ago – and a lot has changed since then. Now with wealthy Saudi owners bankrolling a squad revamp, big things will be expected.

A top four finish last season showed immediate results for the financial outlay, but there has not been quite the consistency shown at the beginning of the new Premier League campaign. The fixture list may not have been kind to Eddie Howe, but three defeats from the first four games is not good enough.

It will be interesting to see how Newcastle get on in the Champions League this season, as it is something new for almost everyone – including the manager. There should be some good nights at St James’ Park in the group stage but getting anything from this opening match might prove a trickier task.

Milan vs. Newcastle United line-ups

Milan (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Hernandez; Krunić, Loftus-Cheek; Pulisic, Reinjders, Leão; Giroud

Newcastle (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schär, Burn, Targett; Longstaff, Guimãraes, Joelinton; Almirón, Isak, Gordon

Milan team news

Pioli will be able to welcome back Fikayo Tomori to the back line after he missed the Inter game through suspension. The rest of the starting XI just about picks itself at the moment and Milan will rely on their English players – and those with Premier League experience, like Giroud – to outsmart their opponents here.

Newcastle team news

Eddie Howe will be as disappointed as Sandro Tonali that the Italian international will be unavailable for this one. He would have been very important in the middle and Sean Longstaff will need to be on top form to deputise. The other question for Howe will be up front, where Alexander Isak should get the nod ahead of Callum Wilson.
