The latest news on Mike Maignan’s injury is not good, so Milan are ready to change their transfer plans by targeting Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario.

It was hoped that Maignan would be back in action when Serie A resumes on January 4 against Salernitana, but today’s tests showed the calf problem that ruled him out of France’s World Cup campaign is still not fully healed.

There are now concerns he could be forced to miss the Supercoppa Italiana clash with Inter too.

Ciprian Tatarusanu has been forced to fill in, but is far from reliable for a long-term role, while first choice Marco Sportiello might only be available from January when his contract with Atalanta has expired.

According to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Milan are therefore turning their attention towards 26-year-old Vicario instead.

He has made numerous sensational saves for Empoli this season, who purchased him outright after a loan from Cagliari at a cost of €8.5m.

Vicario has recently made it into the Italy squad under Roberto Mancini too and all this levitated his price-tag to €15m.

Milan are by no means the only side interested, as Roma were also linked with the Udinese youth product.

There is an advantage here, as his agent is Gabriele Giuffrida, who also represents Milan coach Stefano Pioli.
