Milan turn to Bologna’s Theate after losing Botman

Milan are turning towards Bologna defender Arthur Theate now that LOSC centre-back Sven Botman has accepted a Newcastle United move.

The Rossoneri need a new defender to replace Alessio Romagnoli, who is heading towards Lazio as a free agent after his contract ran down.

Sportitalia report Botman had wanted Milan, but the difference between the two offers was far too substantial, Newcastle practically doubling the Italian proposal for a total €40m including add-ons and performance-related bonuses.

The Scudetto holders are therefore looking at cheaper alternatives, which include Bologna player Theate.

Sky Sport Italia point Milan towards the 22-year-old Belgium international who has three senior caps for his country.

Versatility is an important element, as he can also play at left-back and is very strong in the air, scoring two goals in 31 Serie A appearances for Bologna.

He was initially on loan from KV Oostende, but Bologna activated their option to buy for €6m.
