Milan are turning towards Bologna defender Arthur Theate now that LOSC centre-back Sven Botman has accepted a Newcastle United move.

The Rossoneri need a new defender to replace Alessio Romagnoli, who is heading towards Lazio as a free agent after his contract ran down.

Sportitalia report Botman had wanted Milan, but the difference between the two offers was far too substantial, Newcastle practically doubling the Italian proposal for a total €40m including add-ons and performance-related bonuses.

The Scudetto holders are therefore looking at cheaper alternatives, which include Bologna player Theate.

Sky Sport Italia point Milan towards the 22-year-old Belgium international who has three senior caps for his country.

Versatility is an important element, as he can also play at left-back and is very strong in the air, scoring two goals in 31 Serie A appearances for Bologna.

He was initially on loan from KV Oostende, but Bologna activated their option to buy for €6m.

  1. This is the whole problem with Milan. They are stingy and won’t pay decent money, then end up getting snubbed and having to settle for a player of less quality and less value to them.

  2. My god how could Milan make the same mistake twice. First Yonghong Li, now Red Bird. I guess they give you no wings. Oil money has not brought a CL to Plastic City or P$G, but they remain competitive in terms of recruitment, and will always be contenders. Glazers, Kroenke, Freidkins have not taken their clubs to higher places. Looks like Milan could follow suit.

  3. Stop. If you can’t sign a real player like Botman who was courted for a whole year, then better not sign anyone there at all. Go ahead with Tomori, Kalulu, Kjaer and Gabbia and spend your peanuts elsewhere.

  4. It has nothing to do with the new owners. Just because Milan won the championship does not make them rich. It will take three to four seasons of qualification for the cl to compete with Inter financially and a new stadium to compete with Juventus financially.
