Milan had been expected to sell Malick Thiaw to Newcastle United if the offer reached €35m plus bonuses, but the Premier League side are instead turning to Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace.

The Rossoneri brought in Strahinja Pavlovic from RB Leipzig this summer and there were also suggestions they could part with Thiaw if the price was right.

Their demand for the German international was around €35m plus bonuses, reflecting the fact he turns 23 next week and can play in numerous roles including central defence, right-back and defensive midfielder.

Thiaw no longer first choice for Newcastle

Newcastle United were eager to go for him, but today The Athletic reports that the Magpies are instead in negotiations with Crystal Palace to sign England international defender Guehi instead.

It would be a far more expensive investment than Thiaw, even potentially twice as much, but also bringing in one of the most impressive players for England at EURO 2024.

Milan paid €8.8m to purchase the German from Schalke 04 plus up to €10m in add-ons in the summer of 2022.

  1. Thiaw has been patchy at best for Milan, and when he’s been bad, he’s been truly awful. But he’s still young. I’m amazed Newcastle were looking at him in the first place, TBH. This probably means that Milan won’t be signing anyone else due to their tight-arsed, lowballing American owners. A once-great club in a sad state.
