According to Record, Milan star striker Rafael Leao has been ordered to pay €16.5m to his former club Sporting CP for rescinding his contract in 2018.

Leao left the Portuguese club at the end of the 2017-18 campaign following an assault from Sporting fans who were furious with their players for missing out on a Champions League placement.

Like many of his former teammates, Leao decided to rescind his contract by mutual agreement after the incident.

Leao joined Lille on a free transfer in 2018 and completed a €23m move to Milan one year later.

Sporting argued that they hadn’t given the green light to rescind their agreement with Leao and sued the Milan striker.

The Arbitral Court of Sport ordered Leao to pay €16.5m in March 2020 and the Lisbon Court of Appeal has now confirmed such a decision.

Sporting CP had asked for higher compensation, demanding the entire €40m release clause included in Leao’s contract at that time.

Milan are not involved in the case and Leao can now lodge an appeal to the Supreme Court.
