There are reports France could be forced to leave Milan centre-forward Olivier Giroud on the bench for the World Cup Final against Argentina.

It kicks off in Qatar on Sunday at 15.00 GMT.

According to L’Equipe, Giroud is a major doubt to start the match because he is struggling with a knee issue during training.

It would be a huge blow for Les Bleus, because the 36-year-old has been their second top scorer in the tournament so far with four goals in five games.

He is challenging Kylian Mbappé and Argentina’s Julian Alvarez for the Golden Boot as top scorer in the 2022 World Cup.

Giroud went off at the 65th minute during a 2-0 semi-final victory over Morocco, but the knee issue seems to have intensified over the last 24 hours.

Instead, Marcus Thuram was tested in the trident attack, moving Mbappé to the centre-forward role.

Coach Didier Deschamps had previously received good news with the return of Adrien Rabiot, Theo Hernandez, Dayot Upamecano, Kingsley Coman, Aurelien Tchouameni and Raphael Varane to training after various knocks and a flu bug.
