‘Milan squad will make fans happy’

Sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli insists the Milan squad “still hasn’t shown its full potential and will give the fans great satisfaction” going forward.

Milan are 25 points off the pace in Serie A and face a fight to qualify for the Champions League next season, despite spending more than €200m on new players last summer.

Mirabelli also came under scrutiny for appointing Gennaro Gattuso as Vincenzo Montella’s replacement, but he told Premium Sport: “Rino is doing a great job with the squad.

Mirabelli also came under scrutiny for appointing Gennaro Gattuso as Vincenzo Montella’s replacement, but he told Premium Sport: “Rino is doing a great job with the squad.

“We’re very focused on what happens on the pitch, and on Sunday there’s Roma, which is a crucial match. After mid-March, we’ll start planning Milan’s future.

“Criticism against me? Choosing Rino was the icing on the criticism cake. We were and remain convinced that we made the right choice, and there’s a squad that still hasn’t shown its full potential.

“They’ll give the Milan fans great satisfaction and they offer a solid base for the future.

“Qualifying for the Champions League? We have the sacred duty to make it happen. There’s only winning in the club’s DNA, even if we’re a little behind.

“We also hope to make it happen through the Europa League.”
